What you should know about COVID-19 to protect yourself and others

What is COVID-19?

COVID-19, also known as Coronavirus is a respitory illness that can be spread between people

Classified as a pandemic, this virus has spread throughout the world

Know how it is spread

A person can be infected with the virus if they come within close contact with a person who has COVID-19

Droplets from a person coughing, sneezing, or talking can also infect a person

A person may get infected if they touch a surface that has the virus on it and touch their mouth eyes or nose afterwards

Protect yourself and others

As there is no vaccine yet, officials recommend avoiding exposure to the virus

Officials recommend staying at home as much as possible and to wear a mask that covers the nose and mouth in public areas

Clean and sanitize frequently, especially surfaces that are used the most often

Wash your hands thoroughly and often

Social distancing

Since infection of the virus can spread by close proximity, maintain a social distance of at least 6 feet

Limit in-person contact as much as possible by ordering groceries and other items online when possible

Prevent the spread

If you are sick and symptoms are not urgent, self quarantine at home, otherwise seek medical advice

Avoid public areas and public transporation

Wear masks if you must leave your home

Know your risk

The virus is particular in which some people will exhibit symptoms while others are asymptomatic

Everyone is at risk of getting COVID-19, but older adults and people with underlying medical conditions may be at higher risk for more severe illness


Symptoms

Reported symptoms that may appear 2-14 days after infection:*

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

    Stop the Spread of Rumors

    Know the facts about COVID-19

    1. Diseases can make anyone sick regardless of their race or ethnicity.
      • - Fear and anxiety about COVID-19 can cause people to avoid or reject others even though they are not at risk for spreading the virus.
    2. For most people, the immediate risk of becoming seriously ill from the virus that causes COVID-19 is thought to be low.
      • - Older adults and people of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions may be at higher risk for more serious complications from COVID-19.
    3. Someone who has completed quarantine or has been released from isolation does not pose a risk of infection to other people.

    4. There are simple things you can do to help keep yourself and others healthy.
      • - Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing; going to the bathroom; and before eating or preparing food.
        - Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
        - Stay home when you are sick.
        - Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
    5. You can help stop COVID-19 by knowing the signs and symptoms:

      Seek Medical Advice if You

        - Develop symptoms

      AND

        - Have been in close contact with a person known to have COVID-19 or live in or have recently traveled from an area with ongoing spread of COVID-19. Call ahead before you go to a doctor’s office or emergency room. Tell them about your recent travel and your symptoms.
